Five Stretches to Get the Most Out of Your Foam Roller

1. Lateral Quad Massage

This is one of the most effective foam roller stretches for both knee pain and tight quads. Placing the roller perpendicular to your body, lay your right thigh over it while keeping it straight and turning your foot facing left. Keep your left leg bent and hip open, always placing the foot directed left. Place your left hand on your thigh and lean your right forearm facing ahead and roll your body slightly ahead and towards the floor and then back. 

2. Hamstring Roll Out 

This simple stretch goes a long way. Place your right hamstring over the roller and your hands under your shoulders facing backward for support. Use your bent left leg and arms to roll back and forth and feel your hamstrings release. 

3. Adductor Massage 

To relieve your groins and knees simultaneously, try this stretch. Lie with your stomach on the ground and bend your left leg at a 90-degree angle over the roller while keeping your right leg straight. Shift your weight back and forth using your arms to direct you. 

4. Tricep Smash

This tricep stretch does wonders for tight shoulders. Kneel on the floor with your foam roller perpendicular to you and place your right tricep onto it while flexing your forearm up and down. 

5. Upper Back Extension 

Lying down with your upper back on the foam roller, hug yourself with your arms across both shoulders while lifting your upper body up. This releases the upper back and shoulders.
